Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the potential of wind energy for a remote area of Meiktila, central part of Myanmar. A total of 10 years monthly mean wind data at 10m height were assessed from Myanmar Meteorological Department. The collected wind speed data was calculated at 60m hub height. Annual mean wind speed in the region was 2.78m/s and the annual wind energy available was 88.24W/m2 or 773kWh/year in the height of 60m. The values of annual Weibull shape parameter (k) and scale parameter (c) were 1.58 and 3.04m/s respectively. The annual maximum energy output was 7113kWh powered by 2kW rated wind turbine integrated with Omni-Direction-Guide-Vane (ODGV) and the cost of electricity obtained was found $0.21/kWh in the best scenario. According to the results, the selected location is only suitable for small scale wind energy application.
