Abstract

The construction industry is responsible for consuming most of our resources. Many studies have been carried out in order to adopt a sustainable approach in this sector and many tools have been developed in order to assess and certify “sustainable building” most known as Green Buildings. Moreover, according to other previous researches, the energy consumption and waste is mainly caused by the construction industry, hence, this paper aims to focus on the energy category in these assessment tools (Green Building Rating Systems – GBRS), more specifically in BREEAM, LEED and Green Star NZ in order to 1) examine and compare the importance and priority given to the energy category among these three schemes; 2) analyze the main requirements; 3) find out the most sufficient rating systems in terms of energy. The result of this study shows that the energy category is the most important of all the others and, despite many differences in their approach to energy conservation, BREEAM, LEED and Green Star NZ all focus in reducing energy and global emissions.
