NZAAR Series

Four international event series held in Malaysia by the New Zealand Academy of Applied Research between 2016 and 2018. They are the direct predecessor of the GDI conference series, and their proceedings are preserved here in full.

Before GDI there was NZAAR. The New Zealand Academy of Applied Research Ltd, based in Auckland, ran a programme of one day, multi-conference events on the natural and built environment, cities, sustainability and advanced engineering.

Each event gathered several themed conferences under one roof: architecture and landscape, urban design and planning, civil engineering and construction, environmental engineering and renewable energy, and, from December 2016, building information modelling and computational design. Each programme brought doctoral researchers, senior academics and practitioners into the same sessions. Plenary voices came from the Malaysia Green Building Confederation, the University of Malaya, Taylor’s University, IEN Consultants and AUT.

The series matters to GDI for a specific reason. Its thematic span, from building physics to urban governance, is the span that GDI later organised into the green, digital and intelligent strands, and several of its contributors went on to chair, review and keynote at GDI. NZAAR ceased organising events after January 2018. This archive keeps its scholarly record available, citable and correctly attributed.

The Editions

Four International Gatherings, 2016 to 2018

From Putrajaya in June 2016 to Kuala Lumpur in January 2018, each edition convened a family of themed international conferences under a single programme. Every record sets out the date and venue, the constituent conferences, plenary speakers, scientific committee and partners, drawn from the published proceedings and NZAAR’s own records.

How the Volumes Are Credited

None of the four volumes names an individual editor. Each was issued under the imprint of the publisher, the New Zealand Academy of Applied Research Ltd, and NZAAR’s own indexing notice records the proceedings under the book group author NEW ZEALAND ACAD APPL RES LTD. GDI Academy follows that record: the publisher is credited as the corporate author of each volume, and the Editorial Board of the series and the Scientific Committee printed in each volume are credited by name below, without attributing to any one of them an editorship the proceedings themselves do not state.

Partners

Institutional Partners

Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC)

Institutional partner

Formed in 2007 and registered in 2009, the Malaysia Green Building Confederation, now the Malaysia Green Building Council, is a non-profit organisation devoted to sustainable buildings in Malaysia, with the stated ambition of leading green building in Southeast Asia. Its programmes include the Leadership in Sustainability Awards and CarbonScore. MGBC partnered with all four NZAAR events, and its President delivered the official opening of the first, in Putrajaya in June 2016.

Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA)

Institutional partner

The Continental Automated Buildings Association, which now operates as the Association for Smarter Homes and Buildings, is an international not-for-profit industry organisation that has promoted advanced technologies in homes and buildings since 1988 through collaborative research, white papers and industry councils. Its partnership with all four NZAAR events connected the series to the intelligent and connected buildings industry.

Science Publications

Institutional partner and sponsor

Established in 2004, Science Publications is a publisher of peer-reviewed, open access journals in science, technology and medicine, with some thirty titles including the American Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the American Journal of Environmental Sciences. It served as institutional partner and sponsor of all four NZAAR events.

CrowdReviews

Institutional partner

CrowdReviews is a review platform that ranks software and services on the basis of client reviews, across more than 600 software categories that include construction management software. It partnered with the third and fourth NZAAR events in Kuala Lumpur.

Responsive Green Urban Built Environment (RGUBE)

Supporting partner

The Responsive, Green Urban Built Environment Research Lab, led by Dr Amirhosein GhaffarianHoseini and Dr Ali GhaffarianHoseini, works on building intelligence and performance, sustainable urban planning, digital twins, urban microclimate and thermal comfort, and the resilience of infrastructure. It supported the third NZAAR event in July 2017, and its research agenda prefigures the green, digital and intelligent focus that GDI later adopted.

Publication Ethics

NZAAR stated that it followed the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Core Practices for publishers. GDI applies the same principles today through its publication ethics policy. Concerns about any archived paper can be raised through the contact page and will be handled under those principles.

About This Archive

Papers are reproduced from the four original compiled volumes without change to the authors’ text, figures or page numbers. Titles are shown in title case and author names as printed. Each PDF carries an archive cover sheet and a one-line running header. Where the original volume contains an inconsistency, an editorial note records it and the printed text is left as published.
