Abstract
The façade is an essential component of commercial and public buildings and plays a fundamental role in their energy efficiency and on their carbon footprint. This research aimed to investigate the most recent trends in advanced façade designs that apply metal components to achieve high environmental performances and minimise environmental impacts. Goal of the research was to better understand current and future design strategies of metal facades for high-performance buildings. More than 100 precedents, built between 2015 and 2023, were examined to better understand the recent application of these materials and products in advanced façade designs. Parameters such as type of façade components, alloys, finishing, surface albedo, context etc., were taken into consideration. A literature review on environmental impacts of new metal facades and claddings was carried out to inform and validate the results of the survey on precedents. Results showed a higher incidence of aluminium over other materials. Claddings tend to be more lightweight, de-materialised, stratified and more permeable, also to reduce embodied carbon and improve acoustic performances. Solar shading is becoming a prevalent application and new smart materials offer zero-energy systems. Light albedo surfaces are preferred to reduce the urban heat island effect generated by these materials.
