Abstract

In this study, we compare several initiatives aimed at enhancing urban mobility in Wellington, NZ, assessing how each might influence people’s experiences of the city. In particular, we ask the following question: Would increased mobility facilitate access to a broader range of urban activities, and would such access make the city more valued than it already is? We focus specifically on the light rail project abandoned in late 2023, comparing it with options to increase mobility through bike lanes. We also envision a system of autonomous vehicles designed to perform shared rides and compare its effects with those of the two other options. To capture the dynamic nature of urban mobility, we compute over 100,000 isochrones. Utilizing these isochrones, along with urban activity data, we simulate how different mobility options facilitate access to diverse urban activities. Additionally, we build a model to establish quantitative connections between mobility, diversity of activities, and urban value. While the three mobility scenarios we discuss remain hypothetical, they allow us to open a discussion on how changes in urban mobility, achieved through enhancements to various modes of transportation operating at different speeds, may affect urban experiences and value, particularly in Wellington.
